We wanted to do something different…something no one else in town did.  Something that would bring divers together, give them something fun to do and bring more attention to Vancouver Islands reputation of being a top 10 cold water dive destination. Most dive shops around here hold a New Year’s Day dive, a Canada Day dive, a Halloween dive… we even do beach clean ups.  So, we put our heads together and before we knew it the Sink or Swim Scuba Annual Poker Dive was born. Every year for the past five years, we’ve held a poker dive in Nanaimo BC.  It has the biggest draw of scuba divers to any one dive event in Nanaimo, even on Vancouver Island.  Not hard to do when you entice divers with water, a cash jackpot, merchandise prizes and a BBQ. We’re not a picky bunch. ) It started small with just over 20 divers the first year, our record year had over 100 divers sign up for our event, plus they bring friends and family.  We easily have close to 200 people at the dive site eating hotdogs, donating money, and it’s a great opportunity for divers to meet other divers and promote diving to our local community.  The poker dive is easy -even open water divers have no trouble navigating our underwater course.  We give away a cash jackpot, over 100 prizes varying from high-end dive computers, drysuits, even a Seamor inflatable boat!  We raise money for charity, over $5000.00 to date for our local Nanaimo Hospital Foundation.  It is held every summer, it’s the biggest event we hold, the most stressful, and the most fun!
